Buhari, Atiku mourn victims of Lagos train – BRT crash
President Muhammadu Buhari and former vice president Atiku Abubakar have mourned victims of the tran/BRT bus accident in Lagos.
The train accident involving a staff bus and a train claimed six lives with 79 persons injured on Thursday morning.
President Buhari in a statement issued by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, said the unfortunate incident is stressing and extremely sad, and prayed for the souls of the deceased and quick recovery to the injured.
The president commended the Lagos State authorities and federal government agencies for promptly getting involved in relief work.
Similarly, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in his reaction to the sad incident, urged relevant authorities to swiftly investigate the cause of the accident and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He said, “The unfortunate crash of a train and a BRT bus in Lagos this morning is sad news not only to Lagosians but to all of us Nigerians.
“My condolences to the families and friends of the victims and the good people and government of Lagos.
“The powers of states as federating units in Nigeria in the area of transportation must be reinforced with enabling laws and enhanced by the states themselves with knowledge and the requisite expertise in the same sector.
“Emergency and medical rescue services must also be enhanced to avoid casualties in accidents such as these.
“I urge the relevant authorities to swiftly investigate the cause of the accident and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their families the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said.
Recall that a staff bus loaded with workers of Lagos State Government was crushed by a moving train at the Public Works Department (PWD) area in Ikeja, Lagos State.
The incident which happened around past 7:00am on Thursday and confirmed by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Taofiq Adebayo, had recorded many casualties as the staff bus is fully loaded with govt staffs going to office this morning.
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State declared three days mourning of victims of the accident on Thursday.
