Cabinet Reshuffle: Gov scraps Chief of Staff office, sacks SSG, commissioners
The Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced a significant cabinet reshuffle, including the scrapping of the Chief of Staff office and the dismissal of the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Bichi.
The governor stated that these changes aim to strategically realign his administration to deliver “greater dividends of democracy” to the people of Kano State, striving for “optimum performance.”
This major overhaul marks the first significant cabinet change since its establishment in May 2023.

The office of Chief of Staff has been abolished, and Abdullahi Baffa Bichi was dismissed, reportedly due to health issues. Several commissioners have retained their positions, including Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi (Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice), Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud (Commissioner for Agriculture), Dr. Abubakar Labaran (Commissioner for Health), and Engr. Marwan Ahmad (Commissioner for Works and Housing).
Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulssalam has transitioned from the Local Government portfolio to Higher Education, while Hon. Mohammad Tajo Usman has taken over Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata moves from Higher Education to Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Hon. Amina Abdullahi is now in charge of the Ministry for Women, Children, and Persons with Disabilities. Hon. Aisha Lawal Saji has shifted from the Ministry of Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation to Tourism and Culture.
However, five commissioners— including Ibrahim Jibril Fagge of Finance and Ladidi Ibrahim Garko of Culture and Tourism—have been dismissed. The Governor has requested these former officials, along with the ex-Chief of Staff, to report to his office for potential reassignments.
Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, in a statement to the press, elaborated on the changes, underscoring the governor’s commitment to improving governance.
“This reshuffle reflects His Excellency’s determination to ensure his team is well-prepared to meet the aspirations of the people of Kano. Some members have been reassigned to areas where their expertise is most needed,” he stated.
