Camara’s performance propels Senegal to 3-0 victory over Gambia in AFCON title defense

Lamine Camara’s stellar performance led defending champions Senegal to a resounding 3-0 triumph over 10-man Gambia in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener in Yamoussoukro.

The victory propels Senegal to the top of Group C, setting the stage for a promising campaign to defend their title.

Senegal showcased their championship pedigree in the Ivorian heat, with Camara stealing the spotlight by scoring twice.

Despite featuring only five players from the starting team that won the AFCON final two years ago, Senegal demonstrated enough quality to pursue back-to-back titles.

The Lions of Teranga swiftly seized control, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Sadio Mane’s well-placed lay-off found Pape Gueye, who calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Gambia faced adversity early on, compounded by Cardiff City midfielder Ebou Adams’ expulsion for a studs-up challenge shortly before halftime.

Undeterred, Gambia made an effort to rally in the second half, but Senegal’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy thwarted their attempts. The game’s turning point came when Camara, at just 20 years old, received Ismailia Sarr’s pass and delivered a precise low shot into the far corner, effectively sealing Senegal’s victory.

Senegal added a touch of brilliance in the 86th minute, as Iliman Ndiaye’s clever play set up Camara for a remarkable goal from the edge of the ‘D.’ Gambia struggled to mount a comeback, and the match concluded with Senegal securing a convincing win.

Gambia, facing challenges both on and off the field, will regroup for their next game against Guinea on Friday.

Meanwhile, Senegal anticipates a more demanding test against five-time winners Cameroon in their quest for AFCON glory.
