China condemns Trump’s military threats against Nigeria over alleged Christian genocide
China on Tuesday warned against external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs after US President Donald Trump threatened military action over alleged attacks on Christians. Speaking at a Beijing press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China “firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”
Mao — answering questions about Mr. Trump’s comments — reiterated Beijing’s support for Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner” and praised the country’s right to pursue development “suited to its national conditions.” She also criticised unilateral uses of force, saying China backs international cooperation to fight cross-border crime but opposes threatening or deploying force in international relations.
The spokeswoman additionally addressed reports that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had sought military equipment from China, Russia and Iran amid fears of possible US action. Mao warned against measures that undermine peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean, and urged the United States to pursue law-enforcement cooperation through established bilateral and multilateral legal channels rather than resort to force.

On Saturday, Mr. Trump said he had instructed the US Department of War to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria, accusing the government of tolerating violence against Christians and threatening to halt aid. The Nigerian government has repeatedly rejected claims of a targeted campaign against Christians. President Bola Tinubu called the portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant inaccurate and emphasised his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of religion and belief for all citizens.
