Chinese hackers target Trump, Vance and Harris campaign

Chinese hackers reportedly infiltrated Verizon’s telecommunications system, gaining unauthorised access to phone data associated with key political figures, including Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, the hackers focused on phones used by Harris’s campaign. The New York Times reported that the Trump campaign was informed this week of the breach, which involved the targeting of phone numbers connected to Trump and Vance, among others.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining what specific communications may have been compromised. The FBI, alongside the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, has confirmed they are investigating the unauthorized access linked to individuals associated with China.

In a statement, Steven Cheung, communications director for Trump’s campaign, attributed the breach to Vice President Harris’s policies, claiming they emboldened China and Iran to undermine U.S. infrastructure to impede Trump’s potential return to power.

Responding to the allegations, the Chinese embassy in Washington condemned cyber attacks and asserted that China does not intend to interfere in U.S. elections, characterizing them as domestic matters.

This incident follows previous cybersecurity breaches, including a hack of the Trump campaign earlier this year, for which members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps were charged by the U.S. Justice Department.

The situation raises significant concerns about cybersecurity and foreign interference in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
