City stumbles against Newcastle, suffering 2nd consecutive setback without Rodri
Manchester City felt the absence of their influential midfielder Rodri, as they dropped points for the second consecutive Premier League game in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.
City took the lead through a brilliant strike by Josko Gvardiol in the first half, but Newcastle responded with a penalty from Anthony Gordon in the second half, securing a well-deserved point for the Magpies.
Rodri, sidelined for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, was sorely missed in City’s midfield. Manager Pep Guardiola admitted the Spaniard’s importance, calling him “irreplaceable,” as teenager Rico Lewis stepped into a central role alongside Mateo Kovacic.
City’s failure to maintain control in the middle of the park highlighted Rodri’s absence, with Newcastle putting them under pressure throughout the second half.
Despite missing key players, including last season’s top scorer Alexander Isak, Newcastle proved their strength, particularly in the second half when Gordon’s pace and determination earned them a penalty, which the winger confidently converted.

With a roaring home crowd behind them, Eddie Howe’s side came close to snatching a win, and City had to defend resolutely to prevent further damage.
The draw moves Manchester City two points clear at the top of the table, but their lead could be overtaken by Liverpool, Aston Villa, or Arsenal by the end of the weekend.
Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva came off the bench to reignite City’s attack, but Nick Pope’s crucial saves ensured Newcastle held on. Erling Haaland, meanwhile, was kept quiet for the first time this season, as the Norwegian striker failed to score in the league.
Despite a late surge from City, with Bernardo Silva forcing Pope into a remarkable save and Haaland heading straight at the goalkeeper, Newcastle stood firm, leaving City with only a point.
With the dropped points, City’s hold on the Premier League title race appears to be weakening, offering hope to their closest rivals. Guardiola will now have to find a way to navigate the rest of the season without his influential midfield general.
