Colombian president condemns Israeli genocide in Gaza, compares Palestinian suffering to Christ’s passion
In a powerful statement issued during Holy Week, Colombian President Gustavo Petro drew a striking parallel between the suffering of the Palestinian people and the Passion of Jesus Christ, calling Israel’s military actions in Gaza a “bloody genocide.”
“At the moment of the Passion and death of Jesus, let us reflect on the Palestinian people, from where he came, now under a bloody genocide,” Petro wrote on Friday on X (formerly Twitter), responding to a post highlighting the case of Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian physician reportedly in critical condition while in Israeli detention.
Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was allegedly abducted by Israeli forces earlier this year. According to his lawyer, Gheed Qassem, he was first held at the Sde Teiman military base for two weeks before being transferred to Ofer detention camp, where hundreds of Palestinians are detained. Qassem reported that the doctor is suffering severely due to torture, pressure, and humiliation intended to force false confessions.

Petro’s comments, made during a sacred period in Christianity, have intensified international scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The Colombian leader has long been an outspoken critic of Israel’s military campaign, frequently accusing the Israeli government of committing war crimes. Over 51,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since the start of the conflict, with mounting concerns from humanitarian groups over violations of international law.
In response, Israeli authorities have denied all accusations of genocide, stating that their operations target Hamas militants and not civilians or medical personnel.
Meanwhile, a global campaign under the hashtag #FreeDrHussamAbuSafiyahas gained momentum. Health organizations, celebrities, and international leaders have rallied behind the cause, including the World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has publicly called for Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release.
As international pressure mounts, calls for accountability and the protection of civilians and medical workers in conflict zones continue to grow louder.
