Community leaders trained to tackle waste, climate challenges in Yobe

In a bid to build resilience against waste management challenges and flood disasters, local focal persons for the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance (ZCRA) project in Yobe State have been tasked with leading waste management initiatives in their areas.
The call was made by Dr Babagana Boso of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Yobe State University, Damaturu, during a two-day capacity-building training organised for 60 community focal persons, 20 each from the Bade, Damaturu, and Karasuwa Local Government Areas.
The event, facilitated by Plan International under the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance (ZCRA) project, aimed to equip participants with practical strategies to mitigate environmental hazards.
Dr Boso urged the focal persons to hold community meetings to identify and map areas of environmental concern in their respective communities.

He further elaborated on several critical measures to improve waste management, such as securing risk areas, installing clear signage, leveraging local leadership, and fostering government collaboration.
Two participants, Abba Usman, a youth leader from the Pompomari community, and Fatsuma Mohammed, a woman leader from Nayi-Nawa expressed optimism about the impact of the training.
They shared their satisfaction with the knowledge gained and pledged to implement the new strategies for the betterment of their communities through focus group discussions, advocacy, and awareness campaigns on floods and waste management.
