Consensus is undemocratic, dictatorial – Isyaku Ibrahim

Story from Ibraheem Hamza MUHAMMAD

A seasoned politician, Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim, has described the selection of political offices through consensus as undemocratic and dictatorial.

Isyaku speaking in Abuja said that the recent alleged doubtful process of selection of the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is undemocratic and a violation of the right of members of the party to elect their officials.

“Consensus is an undemocratic process by very few bullies of selfishly selecting one favoured candidate amongst several other competent political office seekers.

“Nigeria is claiming to be emulating the American presidential system of government, but it is not emulating the democratic process by allowing a level playing field for the candidates to showcase their manifestoes to canvass for votes from party members in an internal democratic process,” he said.

Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim who was a chieftain of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, (NPN) in the second republic said that democracy would only be sustained when internal democracy is enshrined in all the political parties.

Speaking about the incoming APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, the elder statesman said, “I cannot remember when Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu was said to have been a chairman of the NPN in Plateau State before Nasarawa State was created.

Isyaku, however, called on Nigerians to rise and support growth and development and avoid anything that would jeopardise the future of the country.

“The APC and PDP should be proactive towards developing the country by having and implementing a program to cater and accommodate the about seventy million Nigerian youths consisting of 40 million educated and 30 million uneducated youth who are wandering about without bleak or no future.

“So doing would reduce insecurity and crime and lead to a sustained growth and development in a well-endowed country with abundant resources,” Alhaji Isyaku Ibraheem said.
