Court bans famous rapper from driving after using phone behind wheels
British grime star, Stormzy, has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a phone while behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce in west London.
The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, admitted to the offense in a letter submitted to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. District Judge Andrew Sweet imposed the ban and fined him £2,010 ($2,498) after six penalty points were added to his licence.
Stormzy already had six points for a previous speeding violation, bringing his total to 12, which triggered the disqualification under UK driving laws.
Sweet described Stormzy’s driving record as “not good” and condemned his actions as “dangerous and irresponsible.”
Stormzy’s lawyer, Peter Csemiczky, acknowledged the rapper’s fault, stating, “My client accepts responsibility and apologises.”

The incident occurred in west Kensington on March 7, 2024, when an undercover police officer spotted the award-winning artist using his phone while driving.
Stormzy, a towering figure in the grime music scene, gained international acclaim for blending Jamaican dancehall and hip-hop influences. He made history in 2019 as the first black UK solo artist to headline the Glastonbury music festival, solidifying his place in British music history.
