Court grants ex-AGF ₦500m bail in ₦1.96bn fraud case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the former Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Anamekwe Nwabuoku, bail in the sum of ₦500 million.
Justice James Omotosho, in his ruling, stipulated that Nwabuoku’s bail be secured with two sureties, each providing a guarantee of ₦500 million.
It could be recalled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Mr Nwabuoku on amended charges, accusing him of conspiring with four companies to convert funds derived from unlawful activities.
Nwabuoku faces charges of alleged ₦1.96 billion fraud and was re-arraigned on an amended nine-count charge of money laundering and abuse of office.

The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) has issued a statement clarifying that the Auditor-General of the Federation’s audit report, which highlighted alleged infractions in managing funds, does not relate to the current administration.
The report noted that the Presidential Amnesty Programme had illegally withdrawn over N6 billion and paid tuition for students without records.
In July 2024, Nwabuoku requested more time to refund public funds he and his co-defendant stole.
Mr Nwabuoku made the request in court where he and his co-defendant, Mr Felix Nweke, are facing an 11-count charge bordering on money laundering totaling ₦1.6 billion.
