Court orders former Minister Ngige to remain in prison, adjourns corruption case

Abuja High Court has ordered former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to remain in prison custody pending the continuation of his corruption trial.
Ngige was arraigned before the court on Friday on an eight-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges border on alleged abuse of office, contract fraud, and corrupt enrichment.

According to the EFCC, the former minister is accused of committing multiple financial offences involving the award of questionable contracts and misappropriation of public funds during his tenure. He, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During Friday’s proceedings, the defence team applied for bail, citing the former minister’s health condition. The prosecution opposed the request, arguing that granting bail could jeopardize ongoing investigations.

Presiding Judge, Justice Mariam Hassan, ruled that Ngige should remain in the Kuje Correctional Centre until the court hears and determines his bail application. The matter was adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
The case continues to draw significant public attention as the EFCC intensifies its crackdown on alleged corruption involving former government officials.
