Customs exceeds 2024 N5.7trn target, establishes university

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has exceeded its 2024 revenue target of N5.07 trillion, collecting N5.079 trillion with over a month left in the fiscal year. This milestone was announced by Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi during the 2024 CGC Annual Conference, themed “Nigeria Customs Service: Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.”

CGC Adeniyi attributed the exceptional performance, projected to surpass the revenue goal by 10%, to a partnership-driven strategy in revenue collection and trade facilitation. “This validates our approach and commitment,” he said, emphasizing the significance of collaboration and effective management.

In addition to revenue achievements, the Customs Service is taking a significant step in human capital development through the establishment of a Customs University. Adeniyi described the university as a testament to the NCS’s dedication to building a knowledge-driven service, aligning with the World Customs Organisation’s focus on youth leadership development. This initiative complements a broader talent management program designed to prepare officers for leadership roles.

Adeniyi also highlighted the NCS’s enforcement successes, which include seizures valued at N28.1 billion in 2024 alone. These operations, spanning arms, narcotics, and illicit pharmaceutical products, underscore the service’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and citizens.

“The declaration of a state of emergency at major ports led to the interception of 48 containers of illicit pharmaceuticals, disrupting the flow of harmful goods,” he noted.

The establishment of the Customs University, combined with revenue growth and enforcement measures, reflects the NCS’s proactive approach to transforming Nigeria’s customs operations and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.
