Customs, NMGS join forces to tackle resource smuggling (Pictures)
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has sought a partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to curb the illegal smuggling of natural resources, which has resulted in substantial revenue losses and the depletion of vital raw materials.
Speaking during a visit to the NCS Headquarters in Abuja on 21 November 2024, NMGS President Professor Akinade Olatunji underscored the urgency of enhancing Customs’ ability to identify and protect the nation’s natural assets.
“We are losing vast quantities of resources to illegal smuggling. These finite materials must be safeguarded. A robust collaboration at exit points will ensure proper documentation, revenue generation, and duty compliance,” Professor Olatunji emphasized.
Responding to the NMGS appeal, Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi welcomed the initiative and highlighted the importance of capacity building and synergy.
“Smuggled resources leave the country unchecked, undermining our economy. By enhancing monitoring, ensuring accurate documentation, and enforcing export taxation, we can close loopholes and maximise revenue,” Adeniyi stated.
Both organisations pledged to work together, with a focus on officer training, rigorous monitoring, and coordinated strategies to combat illegal exports.
