Danish PM attacked by man in Copenhagen
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted by a man in a Copenhagen square on Friday, according to a statement from her office. The prime minister was “shocked by the incident,” though no further details were provided.
The attack occurred at Kultorvet in Copenhagen, where the man was quickly arrested. This incident follows a series of attacks on politicians in Europe ahead of the EU elections.
Two witnesses, Marie Adrian and Anna Ravn, described seeing Frederiksen pushed on the shoulder, causing her to stumble but not fall. The man attempted to flee but was subdued by security personnel. Another witness, Kasper Jorgensen, noted that the attacker seemed confused and dazed when restrained.
EU leaders condemned the attack, with European Council President Charles Michel calling it a “cowardly act of aggression” and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola asserting that “violence has no place in politics.” EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen also denounced the assault.

Copenhagen police confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation, but have not released further comments.
Frederiksen, who became Denmark’s youngest prime minister in 2019 and was re-elected in 2022, has since canceled appointments following the attack. Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke expressed solidarity, emphasizing that such violence should not occur in their country.
