Dateline for Old Notes: Kano gov’t, Islamic clerics call for extension

Kano State Government and Islamic clerics from Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Izala sects in the state have urged the federal government to extend the deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria for the swapping of Naira notes due to the unavailability of the new notes.
According to Hassan Musa Fagge, chief press secretary to Kano State deputy governor, the call was a resolution of the meeting held at the Government House on Thursday which had in attendance, the Kano State Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his deputy and APC Gubernatorial Candidate Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, APC running-mate Honourable Murtala Sule Garo, APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, and the Islamic clerics.

They noted that economic activities have been paralysed in the state, which is the commercial nerve centre of Northern Nigeria as a result of the hardship caused by the shortage of the new Naira notes.
The meeting, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the suffering of people in the state due to the shortage of the new Naira notes and set a new deadline.
Their appeals for an extension come a few days after Governor of Yobe Mai Mala Buni, Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly, and other stakeholders urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to shift the withdrawal dateline from 31 January to July 31, 2023.
Neptune Prime recalls there has been an outcry by Nigerians about the scarcity of the redesigned notes in circulation and the difficulties to access banking services by rural dwellers in most parts of the country.

Yet, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has refused all pleas to extend the deadline when the 200, 500, and 1000 will cease to be legal tenders.
Emefiele argued that 90 days should be enough for those who have the old currency to deposit it in the banks.
