The Nasarawa state government has arrested and detained a medical Doctor for carrying out what it termed illegal surgery in a small hospital located at the Karu area of the state close o Abuja, the Nigerian capital city.
MAWA Foundation learned that the surgery which involved the removal of the prostate was performed at Alheri clinic in Rafin Kwara by Mr Henry Etioto, a medical doctor and a Consultant with Federal Medical Center Keffi.
The discovery was made during the continuous action of the state’s inspection of Primary Health Care Facilities headed by the Acting Director of Clinical Services, Mr John Damina Ali.
Speaking while in custody, Etioto said he is entitled as a doctor to carry out any procedure provided he possesses the skill, the knowledge and the facility adding that his action is not regrettable as he was only trying to save a life.
Responding to this, Damina pointed out that the state does not permit surgeries at the primary level and was disappointed at the doctor for uttering such a statement.
Damina added that other illegal surgeries were discovered in a clinic in Roguwa, Godiya clinic in Gidan Zakara among other six medical practitioners including Eto had been arrested and the clinics sealed bringing the total number of sealed clinics to 150 within the last two weeks.
He then added that when investigations are concluded, licences of some offenders will be revoked and clinics shut down permanently.
