Dr Hameed Khalaf Al-Ukaili: When one picture tells the whole story
The picture on the right was taken before the occupation of Iraq, and the one on the left shows the same man after he was imprisoned by the unjust American invasion.
He is the Iraqi professor and nuclear scientist Dr Hameed Khalaf Al-Ukaili, who now wanders aimlessly through the streets of Baghdad.
In the photo, Iraqi students turn to him for help when they struggle with difficult scientific problems.
This is his current condition — loss of sanity, dirty and torn clothes, and long unkempt hair — the state that Dr Hameed Khalaf Al-Ukaili, the Iraqi scholar with a Ph.D. in atomic chemistry and a professor of nuclear chemistry at the University of Cambridge, has reached.
He was released from prison after losing his mind due to torture, after his entire family was exterminated, his home destroyed, and his property confiscated.
His only “crime” was being an Arab Iraqi nuclear scientist and a professor holding a doctorate in advanced atomic chemistry.
His shocking image sums up what Iraq has endured — a picture that speaks louder than a thousand words.
