DSS officers ‘neutralise three notorious bandits, others’ in Niger ambush
At least three notorious bandits were “neutralised” on Friday night in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga Local Government Area of Niger State, following a well-coordinated ambush by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
During the operation, several other bandits reportedly fled into the bushes with gunshot wounds. DSS officers recovered three AK-47 rifles and three motorcycles from the fleeing criminals.
Security sources revealed that the ambush was the result of weeks of meticulous intelligence gathering and the interception and analysis of communication among the bandits by the DSS.
“This operation is one of several daring missions carried out by the DSS in the Northwest and Northeast regions, which have led to the neutralisation or capture of numerous bandits terrorising innocent civilians. The DSS has also successfully conducted operations against the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in the Southeast,” one source stated.
Intelligence gathered by the DSS has reportedly played a significant role in assisting the military and other security agencies in capturing or neutralising terrorists across the country.
“The DSS, under the leadership of Mr Tosin Ajayi, who was appointed Director-General by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has ramped up intelligence gathering and generously shared such information with the military and other security agencies,” the source added.

This enhanced intelligence-sharing has not only reduced the number of ambushes on security personnel but has also significantly weakened IPOB elements in the Southeast.
A military officer, speaking anonymously, praised the DSS, stating: “The successes recorded by the DSS and the support they have provided us are enormous, especially since President Tinubu appointed a highly capable leader to head the agency.
“I believe many of the DSS’s achievements go unreported, as the new DG is committed to restoring the agency’s hallmark of discretion. But I can assure you, their assistance to the military has been tremendous.”
As part of his security reforms, President Tinubu recently pledged to support the DSS in leveraging artificial intelligence to combat insecurity in Nigeria. He made this commitment during the investiture ceremony of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 17 graduates in Abuja.
