D’Tigress become first African team to break into FIBA top 10
Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, has achieved a historic milestone by breaking into the top 10 of the FIBA world rankings. In the latest rankings released on Thursday by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the six-time AfroBasket champions were ranked eighth globally, marking a significant leap of four spots.
This remarkable achievement makes D’Tigress the first African team—across both men’s and women’s categories—to enter the top 10 in the FIBA world rankings. The team’s ascent on the global stage is largely attributed to their outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics, where they stunned the basketball world.
D’Tigress made headlines by defeating strong teams like Australia and Canada during the group stage, becoming the first African team to reach the Quarter-Finals of the Olympics.
Despite their eventual exit at the hands of the USA, the reigning Olympic champions, D’Tigress left a lasting impact on the tournament.

Their exceptional performance at the Olympics also earned head coach Rena Wakama the title of the best coach in the women’s basketball event, further cementing the team’s status as a rising force in global basketball.
The FIBA rankings continue to be led by the USA, followed by Australia and France. China and Spain round out the top five in women’s basketball, with D’Tigress now firmly in the mix as one of the world’s elite teams.
