EFCC summons Okoya brothers over alleged naira abuse in viral video
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Subomi and Wahab Okoya, the sons of prominent billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, to answer allegations of naira abuse following the circulation of a controversial video on social media.
The video, which sparked widespread outrage, reportedly showed the Okoya brothers engaging in actions deemed disrespectful to the Nigerian currency. Alongside the brothers, a police officer featured in the clip has been identified and detained by the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
The incident has triggered debates about inequality in the enforcement of the law, with many Nigerians accusing the authorities of being lenient toward the wealthy. Renowned activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju expressed his frustration in a social media post, stating:
“The Okoya sons are above the law. A country of two laws — one for the poor and the other for the rich.”
Public pressure for accountability escalated, leading to the EFCC’s involvement in the matter.
In a bid to address the concerns, the EFCC issued a formal invitation to Subomi and Wahab Okoya. According to reports, the brothers are to appear before the Special Operations team at the EFCC’s Lagos office, located on 15A Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, on Monday, January 13, 2025.

The invitation was signed by Michael Wetkas, the Acting Director of the Lagos Directorate of the EFCC.
This case has reignited discussions about the treatment of high-profile individuals in Nigeria’s justice system. Many Nigerians view this as a test of the EFCC’s commitment to ensuring accountability, irrespective of societal status.
The authorities have yet to disclose further details about the investigation or the specific charges the Okoya brothers might face. However, public demand for fairness and transparency remains high as the case unfolds.
