8 injured as woman storms university classroom, attacks students with hammer

In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old woman stormed a university classroom in Tokyo and attacked students with a hammer, leaving eight people injured. The suspect, who identified herself as South Korean, was arrested on-site by Tokyo police on suspicion of assault.

The incident unfolded at Hosei University, where students described the chaos that erupted as the attacker began swinging the hammer suddenly during a class. “Everyone was panicking. I was so scared at first that my hands were shaking,” a witness told TV Asahi.

Despite initial reports of head injuries and bleeding, all eight victims received medical treatment and were released without needing hospitalisation. Hosei University issued a statement late Friday, pledging to cooperate with police investigations and prioritise the safety of its students and faculty.

“We will care for students and faculty shocked by the incident and implement measures to ensure campus safety,” the university said.

Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the suspect’s actions were allegedly motivated by frustration over bullying. However, police are yet to confirm the details as investigations continue.

While Japan is known for its low crime rates, violent incidents occasionally occur. In December, a junior high school student was fatally stabbed at a McDonald’s restaurant in southwestern Japan. Earlier, in January 2022, three individuals were attacked outside the University of Tokyo before college entrance exams.
