EFCC reopens N772.2bn alleged fraud cases against ex-governors, ex-ministers, others
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened money laundering cases against 13 former governors and several former ministers.
The implicated amounts total over N853.8bn, with the largest sum of at least N772.2bn under the agency’s current investigation.
In addition, the EFCC is currently probing the alleged looting of N81.6bn in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Furthermore, recent allegations suggest that $2.2bn were diverted through money laundering, fund diversion, and misappropriation. The individuals implicated in this alleged scheme include former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki; deceased media magnate, Raymond Dokpesi; former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa; and former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, among others.

The EFCC maintains that the $2.2bn was supposed to be utilized for arms procurement to support the fight against terrorism but was instead laundered, diverted, and misappropriated. This comes after the arrest of individuals such as Dokpesi, Bafarawa, and Yuguda, who were all implicated by a presidential committee investigating arms procurement during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The ongoing investigations also involve a number of former state governors and ministers, including individuals like Kayode Fayemi, Ayo Fayose, Bello Matawalle, Chimaroke Nnamani, Sullivan Chime, Abdullahi Adamu, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Peter Odili, Theodore Orji, Danjuma Goje, Aliyu Wamako, Timipre Sylva, and Sule Lamido.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to reviewing and revisiting all high-profile cases, especially those involving former governors and ministers. The agency’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has emphasized that no one is above the law, and all cases will be investigated without bias.
These developments indicate a significant push by the EFCC to address alleged financial misconduct and corruption at the highest levels, underscoring the determination to hold public officials accountable for their actions.
The increasing focus on high-profile corruption cases reflects the EFCC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and combating financial impropriety, regardless of the social or political
