Egbetokun orders investigation as police flag 612 stolen vehicles in September

The Nigerian Police Force has flagged a total of 612 stolen vehicles across the country during the month of September 2024.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who noted that the vehicles were identified through the newly implemented Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR).

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into the syndicates responsible for the vehicle hijackings. He also directed that further efforts be made to dismantle the criminal networks involved in the thefts.

Adejobi, speaking during a press conference in Abuja, revealed that seven of the flagged vehicles had already been subjected to detailed investigation, and three of them were successfully recovered. He highlighted the success of the E-CMR initiative, which was designed to significantly curb the incidents of vehicle theft across the country.

“The E-CMR system has been instrumental in identifying stolen vehicles,” Adejobi explained. “One of the vehicles, stolen from Abuja, was traced to Ilorin, Kwara State, and it was returned to its rightful owner last weekend.”

He added that the police will intensify efforts to ensure that more stolen vehicles are recovered and that those behind the crimes are brought to justice.

The police have called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially relating to vehicle theft, as they continue to leverage technology in the fight against crime.
