Election Preparedness: Yobe Correspondents’ Chapel trains journalists on fact-checking, safety skills

In a decisive move to strengthen democracy, the Yobe State Government, in partnership with the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, has trained journalists on ethical and safety standards ahead of the upcoming elections.
The one-day session featured expert presentations on investigative journalism, fact-checking, and conflict-sensitive reporting, critical tools to counter misinformation and sensationalism.
Officially opening the training, Commissioner of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, represented by the Director of Information of the ministry, Ali Musa Yawale, commended Governor Mai Mala Buni and his deputy for supporting media development.
He charged journalists to act as guardians of truth and peacebuilders during electoral periods.
Bego closed with a call for accuracy, fairness, accountability, and peace, reaffirming the state’s commitment to a professional media ecosystem that bolsters public trust in the electoral process.
Speakers including Rabiu Umar, Muhammad Auwal Umar, and Dr Musa Usman covered fact-checking techniques, professional ethics, and reporter safety in high tension settings.
Chapel Chairman Nabil Balarabe and NUJ Chairman Rajab Ismail Mohamed both praised the initiative, urging continued capacity building for journalists.
