EPL: Everton sack Sean Dyche, appoint Leighton Baines as interim coach

Everton Football Club have parted ways with manager Sean Dyche following a dismal run of form that saw the team win just one of their last 11 matches. The Toffees currently sit precariously in 16th place, only one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

In a statement released on Thursday via Sky Sports, Everton confirmed that former club legend Leighton Baines will serve as interim manager, with club captain Seamus Coleman assisting. The duo will take charge of Everton’s FA Cup clash against Peterborough later in the evening.

The decision to dismiss Dyche comes after a string of poor performances, including a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth last Saturday, during which Everton failed to register a single shot on target. The team has struggled offensively, failing to score in eight of their last 10 matches.

Dyche, 53, was appointed in January 2023 and initially succeeded in securing Everton’s Premier League status with a dramatic final-day victory over Bournemouth. Last season, he also kept the team in the top flight despite an eight-point deduction for breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The club faces a critical period as they seek to avoid another relegation battle. Everton fans will be hoping Baines and Coleman can inspire a turnaround, starting with the FA Cup encounter. Meanwhile, speculation is already mounting about who could take the reins permanently at Goodison Park.
