Ex-minister Adamu Maina Waziri resigns from PDP, joins ADC
Former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri, has officially tendered his resignation letter from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), announcing his membership in the newly adopted coalition party, African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Waziri, a very close ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also a founding member of the PDP and Board of Trustees member, made this known in a resignation letter cited by Neptune Prime, dated July 2nd, 2025 and addressed to the chairman, Dogo Tebo Ward of the PDP in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.
However, Waziri’s ward chairman, who received his letter surprisingly also announced his own resignation from the PDP and immediately defected to the ADC, saying he shared the resigning BoT member’s vision for a better Nigeria.
The letter read, “May I formally inform you in conformity with the provisions of the PDP Constitution 2017 (as amended) of my resignation as a member of your Party.
“For record purposes, let it be known that the current leadership and tone of the Party are inconsistent with the leadership of a major Party that should offer an alternative platform to its members to exercise their inalienable right and freedom of choice in any Electoral Contest.

“It is ironic that the Party formed in 1998 to confront the then non-democratic Government and successfully led the birth of the subsisting Democracy has lost its moral grounds as the major opposition bastion to the comprador status of political buccaneers.
“Consequently, in exercise of my freedom of association, I hereby tender my membership resignation and return my membership card to find worthy membership of the AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (ADC) with effect from 1600hrs of Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025.
“I look forward to welcoming you aboard the ADC to restore Democratic Hope to our dear Country.”
Responding, PDP Ward Chairman Malam Muhammad Bomai, who represented the local leadership, accepted Waziri’s resignation regretfully, calling him a pillar of the party.
“Waziri has been an institution within the PDP, and we will feel his absence deeply,” he said.
Surprisingly Bomai himself also announced his own resignation from the PDP and immediately defected to the ADC, saying he shares Waziri’s vision for a better Nigeria.
Coalition Movement
Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Senate President, David Mark, and other coalition leaders on Wednesday formally adopted the ADC as the platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Mark and a former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, were announced as the Interim National Chairman and Secretary of the party, respectively.

Although the ADC has already taken over PDP structures in Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa and some other northern states, many of the prominent politicians, being approached, are yet to formally defect.
Over the weekend, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State dismissed media reports that he would lead five other governors from the APC to ADC.
Similarly, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Sunday, disclosed that despite his involvement in the coalition that moved into the ADC, he remains a member of the LP.
Mr Obi said he remains committed to protecting the interests of his supporters and political associates.
He reiterated his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election, asserting that he was qualified for the office.

He said: “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.”
Confirming the takeover of PDP structures in Yobe, Gombe and Adamawa states, Mr. Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said the PDP executives in the northern states had aligned with the coalition.
Ibe said: “The movement is gaining traction. Atiku Abubakar will continue to provide direction to ensure the coalition evolves into a formidable, robust, and viable platform.
“Having achieved that, you can already see the results. The Yobe PDP executive has aligned with the ADC, as has Gombe’s. The Adamawa executives have also pledged their loyalty. The movement is gaining momentum.”
He also praised Atiku’s role in uniting various political groups, describing it as reflecting strong leadership.
