Ex-Miss Nigeria, Edna Ibru, passes away in London
The former Miss Nigeria, Mrs Edna Ibru, has passed away in a London hospital at the age of 80. Mrs Ibru, who was crowned Miss Nigeria in 1964 and became the first Nigerian and African to represent the country at the Miss Universe competition, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Edna Ibru was the wife of the late Olorogun Felix Ibru, the first civilian governor of Delta State who served between 1991 and 1992. The couple had two children together.
The Ibru family, from the Agbarha-Otor Kingdom in Delta State, confirmed the sad news in a statement issued by her son, Dr Paul Ibru, on Saturday.
“Our amazing mother passed into glory on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness,” the statement read. “Until her death, she was full of life, and we never expected her to leave us so soon. However, we cannot question the will of God in her precious life.”
Describing his late mother, Paul noted, “She was a lover of people, a mediator, a mother to many, outrageously humorous, deeply caring, down-to-earth, and full of stories all the time. We will miss her dearly.”

The family promised to announce burial arrangements in due course.
Edna Ibru will be remembered as a trailblazer and a symbol of elegance and grace, who used her platform to inspire countless Nigerians. Her legacy as both a beauty queen and a prominent figure in the Ibru family remains etched in the history of Nigeria.
