Experts call on IGP Egbetokun to reduce police VIP escorts amid rising insecurity

Security analysts have urged Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to cut the number of officers deployed to protect politicians, business elites, and other VIPs. They argue that too many officers are tied to private security duties while communities face rising crime, kidnappings, and bandit attacks.
Experts warn that rural areas and urban centres often have minimal police presence, leaving citizens vulnerable. They say reassigning officers from VIP units to public policing would improve patrol coverage, response times, and public trust in the police.
Critics argue VIPs already have resources to hire private security, and excessive police protection for the privileged comes at the expense of public safety. Many Nigerians on social media support the call, while others caution that some level of VIP protection remains necessary.

The Police Headquarters has yet to respond, but insiders say reforms may be considered as insecurity escalates nationwide.
