Farmer-herder Clashes: Yobe gov’t collaborates with relevant stakeholders on conflict resolution, security

Determined to curb farmer-herder clashes, the Yobe State Government is developing new mitigation strategies, its Security Adviser, Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam has confirmed.

Speaking at a meeting with leaders of major herder associations held in Damaturu, Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, Gen. Abdulsalam (rtd) explained that the session aimed to forge a lasting solution through direct dialogue between security agencies and transhuman communities.

Key measures outlined include exploring a discriminatory ban on cutlass carrying to enhance public safety, maintaining temporary closures of Kukareta, Katarko, and Buni-Yadi markets as proactive steps, with security operations active in these areas.

The Security Adviser called on herders to actively support security forces by reporting suspicious persons or groups.

He also urged marketers to enhance surveillance, “Know people entering your markets. Post watchers, especially on market days, to monitor activities.”

In response, the association leaders including the National President of Kulen Allah, Khalil Muhammad Bello; Miyatti Allah State Chairman Haruna Adamu, Miyatti Allah Kautal Hore’s, Alhaji Ori Bello; and Al-hidaya’s Alhaji Gajimi unanimously pledged cooperation with security operatives fighting insurgency.

Herders during the meeting requested designated grazing routes to prevent cattle from straying onto farmland, a major conflict trigger. They advocated for a structured land allocation system to prevent arbitrary occupation, and a stronger action was urged against thieves stealing animals via motorcycles, especially on market days.

On their parts, farmers at the meeting called for dedicated water points for herders’ animals to reduce conflict, among other issues.

The high-level security meeting included commanders from Operation Hadin Kai, Police, DSS, NSCDC, Agro Rangers, and Vigilante groups.
