FG gives heads of Varsities, Polytechnics go ahead for automatic recruitment

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has made a significant decision to exempt universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) payment platform.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, announced this development after the Federal Executive Meeting led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.

He emphasised that the heads of these institutions have been granted the authority to carry out recruitment exercises without seeking approval from the Head of Service of the Federation.

Furthermore, Mamman revealed that the President has specifically directed the removal of Vice Chancellors from a platform that has caused challenges in the recruitment process.

This decision aims to ensure more effective management of these educational institutions.

In Mamman’s words, “President Tinubu has given the heads of universities and polytechnics the green light for direct recruitment. The main focus of the President and the council is to enhance the efficiency of university management, and this decision is not related to integrity issues or platform preferences.”

He also raised concerns about Vice Chancellors having to leave their responsibilities to come to Abuja for staff enrollment on IPPIS after recruitment, pointing out that universities are governed by laws that grant them autonomy, and the IPPIS has impacted this autonomy.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, added to the announcement by stating, “Today, the universities and other tertiary institutions have been granted a significant exemption from the integrated personnel payroll and information system. The council has kindly approved this. As a result, universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education will no longer be part of the IPPIS.”

In essence, this means that the university authorities and other tertiary institutions will now manage the payment of their personnel from their own resources instead of relying on the IPPIS, signaling a pivotal change ahead.
