FG releases funds for payment of NASU, retirees entitlements

The Federal Government has announced the release of funds designated for the payment of withheld salaries for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU). This was confirmed by Mr. Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.

Mokwa indicated that disbursements for NASU have already begun, with numerous members confirming receipt of their payments. Additionally, funds were allocated for the benefits of retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS).

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees. This announcement comes amidst ongoing tensions, as NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) initiated a nationwide strike earlier this week, demanding resolution of grievances related to payment disparities among university unions.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim stated that the strike will persist for seven days unless the government addresses their concerns. The unions had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum for the Federal Government to rectify these issues.
