Russia pledges full support for Cuba as US fuel blockade deepens energy crisis

Moscow has vowed to provide “all possible assistance” to Cuba amid a deepening energy and economic crisis triggered by intensified U.S. efforts to block oil and fuel shipments to the Caribbean nation, Kremlin officials said on Monday.

The Kremlin described the fuel situation in Cuba as critical, accusing Washington of using “suffocating” measures that are already causing widespread hardship and disruptions across the island. Russian officials stated they are maintaining close diplomatic coordination with Cuban authorities and are exploring ways to alleviate the mounting difficulties.

The moves by Washington come as part of a broader policy that has seen the United States clamp down on traditional avenues of oil supply to Cuba, including cutting off Venezuelan shipments and threatening tariffs on other countries that continue to provide fuel to the island. Cuban officials have warned of electricity blackouts, severe transport disruptions and growing shortages of essential commodities as a result of the tightening blockade.

In response, Russian diplomatic spokespeople stressed Moscow’s longstanding commitment to Havana, emphasizing that support could include continued energy cooperation and other forms of aid aimed at helping Cuba navigate the crisis. Russia’s ambassador in Havana earlier reaffirmed that Moscow intends to keep oil flowing to the island despite U.S. pressure.

The intensifying geopolitical standoff is occurring against the backdrop of broader regional concern. Countries such as Mexico have already sent humanitarian aid to Cuba, and a coalition of developing nations has publicly condemned the U.S. economic pressure, calling for an end to the decades-long embargo that many argue violates international law and worsens humanitarian conditions.

Cuba’s government has also signalled willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington over the crisis, although it insists any talks must respect its sovereignty and fundamental principles. Meanwhile, ordinary Cubans continue to grapple with rolling power outages, longer fuel queues and the mounting impact of the island’s shrinking energy supplies.
