FG steps up border security ahead of nationwide protests

The Federal Government has heightened security measures across Nigeria’s borders in anticipation of nationwide protests scheduled to begin on August 1.

This decision aims to prevent any disruptions and ensure national security amid planned demonstrations against the current economic situation.

Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), issued a statement through the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance. Nandap directed all Zonal Heads, State Command Comptrollers, and Divisional Immigration Officers (DIOS) to enhance surveillance and monitor border activities closely.

The heightened security measures include a temporary suspension of all leave applications for immigration officers to ensure full operational capacity.

Nandap’s directive is focused on preventing any foreign elements from exploiting the protests to destabilize the country. She urged officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and patriotism during this period.

“The responsibility of safeguarding our nation’s borders rests on our shoulders,” Nandap stated.

“We must ensure that no external forces can take advantage of this situation to disrupt our country.”

Nandap reassured Nigerians of the NIS’s commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and maintaining national security both during and after the planned protests.

This proactive approach is part of the government’s broader strategy to manage and mitigate potential risks associated with large-scale public demonstrations.

The planned protests have been organised by various groups to address rising living costs and economic hardships.

The government’s measures reflect its intent to manage public dissent while ensuring that the country’s borders remain secure.

The NIS’s enhanced security measures will be in place throughout the protest period to maintain order and prevent any possible disturbances.
