FIDA Yobe reveals sexual, gender-based violence cases under its watch

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Yobe State branch, has disclosed the cases currently under its watch in the state.

In a statement signed by Hannatu Faruq Jauro, Esq. chairperson of FIDA in Yobe State, the organisation made the disclosure in a bid to show its progress in reducing the cases of sexual, gender-based violence, and child abuse in the state.

She said, “FIDA, Yobe State is a non-profit, non-political, voluntary association of women called to the practice of law in Nigeria. FIDA Nigeria’s primary role is to protect, promote and preserve the rights of women and children in Nigeria.

“Its core values are transparency, accountability, teamwork, integrity, mutual respect, commitment, service and we are non-partisan.

“I want to make it very clear that the mission of FIDA, Yobe State is to promote, protect and preserve the rights, interests and well-being of women and children through the use of legal framework to ensure that they live free from all forms of discrimination, violence and abuse in the society,” she said.

BRIEF ON OUTSTANDING CASES IN THE PERIOD UNDER REVIEW

1) COP V. UMAR ALHAJI MUSTAPHA who was charged for raping and impregnating his 18-year-old biological daughter was convicted and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on 4th August, 2022. The Chief Magistrate 1, Bilyaminu Mohammed who presided over this case sentenced the accused to 5 years with a compulsory fine of N5,000 for incest and 20 years with a compulsory fine of N10,000 for rape, he was found guilty of incest and rape under section 390 and 283 of the penal code.

2) THE STATE V. MUHAMMAD FAROUK AKA ZIKO YBS/HC/PT/05C/2021

The accused was charged for voluntarily causing harm and for the rape of a 70-year-old woman at Gadaka town in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State. The prosecution called 4 witness and tendered a confessional statements of the accused person. The accused, testified
his own defence and called no other witnesses. The court finally convicted the accused and sentenced him to 25 years imprisonment and ordered that his name be placed on the register of convicted sex offenders.

This case was presided over by Honourable Justice U.Z. Mohammed of the Potiskum High Court on the 18th July 2022.
