Flood displaces 49,000 in Yobe as heavy rains devastate communities

Story from Jane AISO

Days of torrential rainfall in Yobe State have displaced over 49,000 people across 408 communities, according to the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). Dr Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of SEMA, disclosed that the flooding has affected approximately 18,000 households, causing severe disruption throughout the region.

“The flood has injured 400 people and destroyed 23,000 mud houses, including public facilities,” Goje explained, adding that three major roads and bridges have been disconnected, affecting transportation in all 17 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

In response, the Yobe State government has initiated a relief effort, disbursing N50,000 to displaced persons in camps and N30,000 to those staying with host communities. “As directed by Governor Mai Mala Buni, registered flood victims are now receiving cash support to ease their hardship,” Goje stated.

The state has also provided first-line aid, including food and non-food items, to many camps where the displaced are sheltered. Goje highlighted that registration and validation of affected individuals continue, ensuring that flood victims receive medical care, hygiene kits, and additional aid.

“The cash disbursement began in Nguru on Friday and will soon extend to other communities like Nangere and Karasuwa,” he added. SEMA is working tirelessly to mitigate the disaster’s impact and restore stability to affected areas.
