Flood: Zulum sets up committee to determine cause of Alau Dam collapse
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has taken significant action following the collapse of the Alau Dam last month, which caused extensive flooding in Maiduguri Metropolis and neighboring local government areas. In a bid to understand the underlying causes of the dam’s failure and prevent future disasters, Governor Zulum has constituted a committee for a thorough investigation.
The catastrophic dam collapse resulted in the displacement of nearly two million people, leading to tragic loss of life and widespread destruction of properties. The Alau Dam, which was constructed between 1984 and 1986, was originally designed to provide water for irrigation and domestic use for residents of Maiduguri and its surroundings.
In a statement released on Friday night, the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, announced the formation of the committee, which will consist of a diverse group of experts and stakeholders.
The committee is chaired by Engr. Abba Garba and includes representatives from the following organisations:

14. Nigerian Army (Member)

The committee’s primary objective will be to investigate the factors that led to the dam’s collapse and to provide recommendations to avert similar incidents in the future. This proactive measure comes at a critical time when the state is facing the dual challenges of infrastructure vulnerability and humanitarian crises stemming from the flooding.
The committee is scheduled for inauguration on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the council chamber of the government house, where they will outline their approach and timeline for the investigation. Governor Zulum’s decision to establish this committee reflects his commitment to addressing the issues facing Borno State and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
