Forgotten by Time: The fateful end of Noah, Sheba, Iram, Salih

In the depths of history, there are tales of nations whose arrogance led to their doom—nations mentioned in the Quran that met with catastrophic ends. These stories of the past are not just moral lessons but are backed by fascinating archaeological evidence that brings them to life.

Noah and the Ark: A Legend on Mount Judi

The story of Noah is perhaps one of the most well-known. The Quran describes how the earth was purged of wickedness by a divine flood, with only Noah, his followers, and pairs of animals spared in a massive Ark. While the Bible places the Ark on Mount Ararat, an archaeological study has found what some believe to be the remains of Noah’s Ark atop Mount Judi, approximately 20 miles south. The boat-shaped formation, with decaying timbers resembling rib structures, is a testament to this ancient tale.

The Quran recounts: “And it was said: ‘O earth! Swallow up your water,’ and ‘O sky! Withhold (your rain).’ And the water subsided, and God’s decree was fulfilled. And the Ark came to rest upon Mount Judi…” (Quran 11:44). This miraculous story is a sobering reminder of the consequences of widespread corruption and disbelief.

The Temple of Sheba: A Prosperous Civilization Reduced to Ruins

The people of Sheba were blessed with wealth and fertile lands, but they turned away from God, worshipping others instead. The Quran describes how their once-prosperous civilization in Marib, Yemen, was reduced to ruins. Today, all that remains are the broken sluices of their dam, some Sabaean inscriptions, and the remnants of their grand temple.

The Quran states: “Indeed, there was a sign for Sheba in their dwelling place: two gardens on the right and on the left. But they turned away, so We sent against them the unleashed dam waters, and converted their gardens into gardens bearing bitter fruit…” (Quran 34:15-17). Their tale is a stark warning against ingratitude and the consequences of turning away from divine guidance.

Ad, Iram, and Ubar: Giants of the Desert, Lost in the Sands

The people of Ad, known for their enormous strength, boasted of their might, believing themselves invincible. The Quran mentions how they built monumental structures in the city of Iram, a place once thought to be a myth—an “Atlantis of the Sands.” However, in 1973, the discovery of the ancient city of Ebla in northern Syria revealed records of Iram, confirming its existence.

Further evidence came in 1992 when satellite images revealed the ruins of a city matching Iram’s description, deep beneath the Omani desert. This city, guarded by towering pillars and thick walls, met a catastrophic end, likely collapsing into a giant sinkhole. The Quran captures their fate: “So We sent to them a ferocious wind in evil days; that We might give them a taste of disgracing punishment in this world. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing…” (Quran 41:16). The story of Ad serves as a powerful reminder that no civilization, no matter how mighty, can stand against the will of God.

The People of Thamud: A City Carved from the Mountains

The people of Thamud were skilled builders who carved their homes out of mountains. But when the Prophet Salih warned them to worship only God, they rejected his message with disdain. The Quran describes their punishment—a mighty blast that destroyed them while sparing their homes.

When Prophet Muhammad passed by the ghost town of Madain Salih, where the Thamud once lived, he advised: “Do not enter except that you are weeping, for this was a place of divine punishment.”

The story of Thamud, like that of the other nations, is an eerie sign for future generations about the dangers of rejecting divine guidance.
