Former Greek PM, Costas Simitis, dies at 88
Costas Simitis, a former Greek prime minister celebrated as a “moderniser” in the nation’s political history, passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. The government has declared four days of national mourning to honour his legacy.
Simitis, a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), played a pivotal role in shaping modern Greece. He succeeded PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou as the party leader and served as prime minister from 1996 to 2004.
Known for his efforts to modernise Greece’s economy and society, Simitis championed privatisation and fiscal stability. His leadership saw Greece adopt the euro in 2001 and facilitated Cyprus’s entry into the European Union.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid tribute to Simitis, describing him as “a worthy and noble political opponent who accompanied Greece on its great national steps.” Mitsotakis lauded Simitis’s commitment to democracy, justice, and expanding individual potential.

Simitis’s guiding principle was that “modernisation has no expiry date,” a mantra that defined his approach to governance and continues to resonate in Greece’s development.
Born in Piraeus, Simitis studied law and economics in Germany and England, where he met his wife, Daphne. The couple had two daughters, Fiona and Marilena.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis extended his condolences to Simitis’s family, emphasising that his contributions to Greece’s progress would ensure his place in history. “Simitis’s legacy runs through the demands of our country today,” he said.
