Several killed as protests over rising cost of living spread across Iran

Story by Okafor Vivian

Several people have been killed and many others injured as nationwide protests over the rising cost of living continue to spread across Iran, escalating tensions between demonstrators and security forces.

The protests, which initially began in major cities over soaring inflation, unemployment, and the weakening national currency, have expanded to multiple provinces. Demonstrators have taken to the streets to express frustration over worsening economic conditions and the high cost of basic necessities.

Clashes reportedly broke out when security forces moved to disperse crowds, leading to casualties in some locations. Iranian authorities confirmed the deaths but have not released a comprehensive casualty figure, while accusing “violent elements” of hijacking peaceful protests.

Eyewitnesses and local reports say shops, banks, and government buildings were targeted in some areas as anger mounted, prompting a heavy security response. Internet restrictions were also reported in parts of the country as authorities sought to curb the spread of demonstrations.

Government officials have acknowledged the economic challenges facing citizens but warned against unrest, vowing to restore order while promising to address legitimate grievances through policy measures.

The latest unrest highlights growing public dissatisfaction amid prolonged economic hardship, making it one of the most significant protest waves in Iran in recent years.
