As the sun dipped below the horizon on this Sunday evening, a powerful message from Governor Mai-Mala Buni made the rounds, sparking excitement and hope across Yobe.
His announcement was not just another policy move, it was a game-changer for the state’s healthcare system.
Governor Buni had given the green light for the employment of 267 healthcare professionals, a strategic step to shore up the state’s medical workforce.
At the core of this initiative were the 140 Buni Scholars, young men and women who had set out for India years ago to specialize in various fields of medical sciences.
Now, with their degrees in hand, they were back on home soil, ready to step into their roles.
These scholars had worked their way through intense academic and clinical training, earning qualifications in BSc Nursing (43), BSc Pharmacy (43), BSc Medical Laboratory Science (22), BSc Radiology (24), BSc Optometry (7), and BSc Public Health (1).

Their journey had been tough, but their hard work has finally paid off.
But the governor didn’t stop there. In a move to recognize and reward those who had already been holding the fort, 127 health technicians who had been sticking it out as volunteers in various health institutions were now officially brought on board.
Their long hours of service had not gone unnoticed, and this appointment was proof that dedication never goes unrewarded.
These new recruits would soon settle into their respective roles across the state. Some would be stationed at Primary Healthcare Centers, which had been established in every political ward, while others would be posted to General Hospitals, now upgraded to specialist hospitals in Gashua, Potiskum, Geidam, and Buni Yadi.
And there’s more to come. Before the year winds down, another batch of doctors, those sent abroad for advanced training in Egypt, China, Russia, and Turkey would make their way back.
They are expected to bolster the University Teaching Hospital and also take up teaching roles at Yobe State University, helping to bring up the next generation of healthcare professionals.
As this Sunday evening fades into night, one thing is clear, Governor Buni is not letting up on his mission to turn things around for Yobe’s healthcare sector.
His actions are not just about today; they are laying the foundation for a healthier tomorrow.
