FRSC to prosecute Peller after viral car crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikToker Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, for unsafe and distracted driving following a road crash that occurred while he was livestreaming on Sunday.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over the growing incidence of reckless driving among celebrities, social media influencers, and digital content creators, warning that such conduct poses serious risks to lives and undermines ongoing road safety efforts.
LEADERSHIP reports that the crash, which involved Peller, was captured in a video that quickly went viral on social media. Reacting to the incident, Mohammed, in a statement signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, described the act as unlawful and highly dangerous, stressing that it could easily have resulted in loss of life.
According to the corps marshal, the incident “is a clear reminder that fame does not place anyone above the law, nor does it justify dangerous behaviour on public roads.”

He emphasised that livestreaming, recording videos, or engaging in any activity that distracts a driver while driving violates traffic regulations and endangers both the driver and other road users.
Following the development, Mohammed directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to immediately commence prosecution of the offender. He noted that the charges would include reckless driving, use of a mobile phone while driving, and distracted driving, in line with existing traffic laws.
Beyond enforcement, the FRSC boss called on professional bodies in the entertainment and digital content industries to take responsibility for promoting responsible behaviour among their members. He urged actors’ guilds, influencer groups, and content creator associations to actively advocate safe road use.
Mohammed warned that celebrities and influencers, who command large followings especially among young Nigerians, must act as role models and “ambassadors of safety, not symbols of recklessness.”
Issuing a firm warning, he stated that the FRSC would apply the full force of the law against anyone found engaging in distracted or reckless driving, regardless of social status or popularity. He stressed that “no social media content, trend, or momentary fame is worth a human life.”

He further reminded motorists that public roads are not meant for entertainment or content creation, describing them as shared spaces governed by laws designed to protect lives.
The FRSC encouraged the public to report dangerous driving and support collective efforts to improve road safety across the country, reaffirming its commitment to safer highways and the enforcement of traffic laws without exception.
