FULL LIST: Reps Committee proposes 30 new states
The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution announced on Thursday that it has received 31 proposals for the creation of new states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
During plenary, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read a letter from the committee, outlining the conditions for approving state creation requests.
According to the letter, the proposals include five from the North Central, four from the North East, five from the North West, five from the South East, four from the South South, and seven from the South West.
The letter referenced Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which sets forth the necessary requirements for initiating the state creation process. The letter states that a request to the National Assembly for a new state can only be approved if it is supported by at least one-third of the members of the Senate, the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly for the area, and the Local Government Council in the area.
It further reminded advocates of new local government areas that Section 8 of the Constitution also applies to the creation of such areas. Specifically, Section 8.3 of the Constitution mandates that the outcome of votes by State Houses of Assembly in the referendum must be sent to the National Assembly for the fulfillment of state demands.
Proposals must be resubmitted in full compliance with the outlined guidelines. The letter requested three hard copies of the full proposal and memoranda to be submitted to the Committee’s Secretariat at Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja. Additionally, electronic copies must be sent to the Committee’s email at info.hccr.gov.nj.
The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the implementation of efforts that align with constitutional provisions and will only consider proposals that strictly adhere to the stipulated requirements.
The proposed new states include:
- Okun, Okura, and Confluence states from Kogi
- Benue Ala and Apa states from Benue
- FCT State
- Amana State from Adamawa
- Katagum from Bauchi, and Savannah from Borno
- Muri State from Taraba
- New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna
- Tiga and Ari from Kano, and Kainji from Kebbi
- Etiti and Orashi as the 6th state in the South East, Adada from Enugu, and Orlu and Aba from the South East
- Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers
- Torumbe from Ondo
- Ibadan from Oyo
- Lagoon from Lagos, Ogun, Ijebu from Ogun, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo, Ogun, and Osun states.
