German nurse jailed for life over serial killing of 10 patients
A regional court in Aachen, western Germany, has sentenced a 44-year-old nurse to life imprisonment for murdering 10 patients under his care.
The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, found that the nurse deliberately injected his victims with lethal doses of sedatives and painkillers between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Wuerselen, near Aachen.
The court ruled that the case involved a “particularly severe degree of guilt,” effectively ruling out the possibility of parole after the standard 15-year term. Prosecutors described the nurse as emotionally detached and indifferent, saying he viewed the patients as obstacles to be eliminated during his night shifts.

Investigators disclosed that he administered excessive amounts of morphine and midazolam — drugs normally used for deep sedation — to hasten the deaths of his victims and lighten his workload. Witnesses said his demeanor throughout the trial was cold and emotionless, while psychological experts testified that he suffered from a personality disorder and lacked empathy.
The convict, who began his healthcare career in 2007 and worked in several hospitals across Germany, joined the Wuerselen facility in 2020. His arrest in mid-2024 followed a spike in unexplained deaths that led to an internal review and a subsequent police probe.
Authorities have since exhumed several bodies to determine if more patients may have fallen victim to the nurse’s actions, raising the possibility of additional charges
