German President criticises U.S. foreign policy

German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier has sharply criticised U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, warning that the global order risks descending into chaos.

He urged the world not to allow the international system to collapse into a “den of robbers” where the unscrupulous take what they want.

In an unusually candid remarks, likely referencing events such as the removal of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro over the weekend, Steinmeier said democracy worldwide is under unprecedented attack.

While largely a ceremonial figure, the German president’s comments carry moral weight, and he enjoys more freedom to voice his opinions than most politicians.

Reflecting on Russia’s annexation of crimea and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine as defining moments, Steinmeier described U.S. actions as “a second historic rupture.

“Then there is the breakdown of values by our most important partner, the USA, which helped build this world order,” he said during a symposium.

He added, “It is about preventing the world from turning into a den of robbers, where the most unscrupulous take whatever they want, where regions or entire countries are treated as the property of a few great powers.”

Steinmeier stressed that active measures are necessary in situations that threaten stability. He called on countries such as Brazil and India to play a role in defending the global order.
