Ghana has introduced school uniforms made from African prints.
The West African country made the move to celebrate and embrace the African heritage.
Photos of Ghanaian students rocking their Ankara prints school uniforms have been shared online with people from other African countries saying it’s a welcome development.
Though schools in Ghana have been using African traditional attires since the 90s, reports say the government is considering making it a law.
Some primary and secondary schools in Ghana are already using African attires.
Also, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in 2019, under Director-General, Prof Kwasi Opoku Amankwa announced the introduction of a new school uniform for Junior High School (JHS) students.
Analysts have called for it to be replicated throughout Africa.
According to a commentator, most countries use post-colonial uniforms in Africa and it’s high time they emulate and consider the African print uniforms.
In April 2019, some Ghanaian parents across the sixteen regions of Ghana had expressed dissatisfaction over the introduction of the new school uniforms by the Ghana education service.
On March 6, 1957, the Gold Coast (now known as Ghana) gained independence from Britain. The West African country was led to independence by Kwame Nkrumah, who transformed the country into a republic, with himself as president for life.
Just like many African countries, Ghana is diverse in several languages. About 50 indigenous languages are spoken throughout the country and the most known language is spoken being Akan.
However, English is the official language and also the formal language of instruction at all levels of education.
But many Africans feel, ‘though we speak English as an official language, we should at least make other things from or culture’.
