Ghana’s former president Mahama wins election
Ghana’s former President John Mahama has reclaimed the presidency after securing a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election. Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, defeated Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who conceded defeat on Sunday.
This historic win makes Mahama the first leader in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to return to power after being previously voted out, highlighting his ability to tap into widespread economic discontent to galvanize support.
A Campaign Rooted in Economic Reset
Mahama, 66, who served as president from 2012 to 2017, centred his campaign on promises to “reset” Ghana’s struggling economy. Following Ghana’s default on debt and a $3 billion IMF bailout, he pledged to renegotiate aspects of the IMF deal, introduce a “24-hour” economy, and create jobs for the youth.
A Life Shaped by Experience
Born into privilege in northern Ghana, Mahama’s upbringing was shaped by political turbulence, including his father’s brief detention during a military coup. He later built a career as a parliamentarian and chairman of the West Africa Caucus at the Pan-African Parliament, cementing his reputation as a seasoned leader.

A writer and Afrobeat enthusiast, Mahama also gained acclaim for his memoir, My First Coup d’Etat, which chronicled his early life and experiences during Africa’s post-independence era.
Promises and Challenges Ahead
Mahama’s agenda includes addressing corruption by creating an office to oversee government procurement above $5 million and supporting the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill awaiting presidential assent. While he enjoys renewed support, his past tenure was marked by energy crises and corruption allegations, issues his administration will need to confront head-on.
Spokesperson Mustapha Gbande expressed confidence in Mahama’s leadership, stating, “People are looking for change, and they trust Mahama to steer the country in a better direction.”
