To forestall the consequences of unlawful sexual intercourse among teenagers, parents and guardians have been tasked to ensure that their children get sufficient sex education when they are still young.
The Commissioner, Ministry of Health in Osun state, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu and other health experts made the call in Osogbo at a programme tagged: “Re-Orientation Training on Sexual Reproductive Health of Adolescent and Youth Friendly Service-Plot Project “of Rotary International.
In addition, parents and guardians were also advised to be friendly with their children and wards to that they would not fall victim to sexual embarrassment and harassment.
Isamotu explained that the adolescent stage is a stage in which both young girls and boys would want to feel among their peers by involving in unlawful sexual intercourse which may lead to unwanted pregnancy and in the end ruin their careers.
To forestall this, the commissioner advocated for the need for teenagers to be enlightened on sex and its consequences before others would capitalise on their ignorance and take advantage of them.
In his lecture, Pharm. Adebisi Adenipekun disclosed that Children should be educated by their parents on Sexual intercourse while they are still young. He explained that young people are not a problem to be solved, but resources to be developed.
Adenipekun further stated that young people represent a positive force in the society, therefore, changes are needed in order for health services to become youth and Adolescent friendly. He said health services play specific roles in preventing health problems and responding to them.
He further stated some of the issues affecting Adolescents to be injuries, trauma, and violence, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, pregnancy and pregnancy complications, mental health, substance use, communicable diseases among others.
Some of the participants are Director, Public Health, Dr. Gbenga Adepoju, Director Nursing Services, Dr. Alo Omoyemi, Mrs. Peju Laogun among others.
