Goat Distribution and Its Political Implications: A critical perspective in today’s modern era, by Imam Isah Musa, PhD
Does the distribution of goats by the government hold any relevance? This question has sparked significant debate following a recent event in Kano State, where the Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir, flagged off the distribution of goats as a means of empowering the people. While this initiative has drawn both support and criticism, it is essential to evaluate it from an agricultural perspective, setting aside any political biases. Any effort that aims to provide livelihoods, generate income, and enhance food security deserves support, provided it is carried out transparently, inclusively, and equitably.
The debate is not about the merits of goat farming itself but rather the processes involved in procuring and distributing the goats. For those familiar with agrarian societies, goats are multi-functional animals that play a crucial role in boosting the economy and improving nutrition, particularly for landless, small-scale, and marginal farmers in rural and semi-urban areas.
Scientifically, goats are versatile and resilient domestic animals, capable of adapting to various weather conditions. They provide numerous valuable products, including meat, milk, skins, and manure, which enriches soil fertility. Goat manure, for instance, is richer in nutrients compared to cow or chicken manure, making it highly beneficial for crops and gardens. Additionally, goat milk is highly nutritious, containing proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins. It is also used to produce butter, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products.

Goats are also a form of savings for farmers, as they can be easily sold for cash in times of financial need. They are prolific breeders, reaching sexual maturity at 10-12 months, with a short gestation period. They begin producing milk at 16-17 months, and instances of triplets or quadruplets are not uncommon.
Given these benefits, a critical question arises: Does Kano State have enough goats to meet its demand? According to the 2023 Agricultural Performance Survey conducted by the National Agricultural Research and Liaison Service, Kano has a goat population of 5.06 million, significantly lower than neighbouring states like Jigawa (7.2 million), Katsina (7.4 million), and Zamfara (8.5 million). Considering the high demand for goat meat and other products, coupled with Kano’s large population, there is an urgent need to promote and expand sustainable, environmentally friendly goat production in the state.
Therefore, the distribution of goats in Kano can be seen as a timely, purposeful, and economical initiative, provided the selection process for beneficiaries is transparent, apolitical, and fair. Critics should advocate for future distributions to focus on procuring improved, high-yielding breeds, ensuring that beneficiaries are selected openly and transparently, and that they receive training in modern husbandry techniques. This approach would help achieve the desired goal of rapidly increasing the goat population in Kano, surpassing neighbouring states, while also creating employment, generating wealth, and improving livelihoods.
As an agricultural enthusiast, I support meaningful investments in short-cycle agricultural activities like goat distribution. However, it is also crucial for the state to encourage the establishment of commercial goat farms. These farms should operate under intensive and semi-intensive systems, which are more sustainable and productive. At the same time, the state should discourage the extensive system where goats roam freely, causing environmental pollution and damaging farms and vegetation in both urban and rural areas.
