Katsina Gov Radda distributes 40,000 goats to women, farmers

The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, has launched the distribution of 40,000 goats as part of the Goat Rearing Initiative Programme, aimed at positioning the state as a leading hub in livestock production.

The ₦5.7 billion initiative focuses on empowering women economically by providing local farmers, particularly women’s groups, with the necessary resources, training, and support to successfully rear goats.

Organized by the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Community Level Committees, the programme acknowledges the vital role women play in fostering economic growth and societal progress.

Held in Dan-Nakola town, Daura Local Government Area, the event also covered key topics like livestock nutrition, health management, and sustainable farming techniques. Training sessions will be provided to equip beneficiaries with skills for effective goat breeding practices.

In addition to livestock, the programme includes infrastructure development and financial support. A total of 10 women and one large-scale farmer from each of the 361 political wards have been selected to benefit. Each woman will receive four goats, consisting of one male and three females, while each large-scale farmer will be given 50 goats.

Hon. Hadiza Yar’adua, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, and Yusuf Jibia, the Special Adviser to the governor on Livestock and Grazing Reserves, both described the programme as a significant investment in economic empowerment and livelihood improvement.

Beneficiaries are expected to repay the programme by returning an equal number of goats after a specified period. Governor Radda also announced plans to establish a goat farm in Rimi Local Government Area, located in the Katsina Senatorial Zone. This farm will focus on genetic improvement, as well as producing high-quality milk and manure. It will also serve as a training center for goat production, breeding, and animal husbandry.
